UPSC CGSE 2027: Apply Online for Combined Geo-Scientist Examination

The Union Public Service Commission has published the UPSC CGSE 2027 notification for the Combined Geo-Scientist and Geologist Examination, offering 127 tentative vacancies across the Geological Survey of India (111 posts) and Central Ground Water Board (16 posts). Posts on offer include Geologist, Chemist, Assistant Geologist, Assistant Geophysicist, Scientist ‘B’ and Assistant Hydrogeologist, catering to postgraduates in Geology, Geophysics and Chemistry.

Under UPSC CGSE 2027, candidates must hold a two-year postgraduate degree in the relevant Earth Science discipline and fall between 21 and 32 years of age as on 1 January 2027. The selection process runs through a Preliminary Examination, a Main Examination and a Personality Test, spread across the current and next calendar year.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Geologist/Assistant Geologist: Master’s in Geology, Applied Geology or related Earth Sciences.
  • Geophysicist/Assistant Geophysicist: M.Sc. in Physics, Geophysics or Applied Geophysics.
  • Chemist/Assistant Chemist: M.Sc. in Chemistry or a related discipline.
  • Scientist ‘B’ (Hydrogeology)/Assistant Hydrogeologist: Master’s in Geology, Applied Geology or Hydrogeology.
  • Age Limit: 21 to 32 years as on 1 January 2027, with relaxation of 5 years for SC/ST, 3 years for OBC, 3–5 years for ex-servicemen/disabled defence personnel, 10 years for PwBD and 5 years for GSI/CGWB employees applying for the same post.

Selection Process

  1. Stage-I – Preliminary Examination: Objective type, 400 marks (General Studies + stream-specific paper).
  2. Stage-II – Main Examination: Conventional/descriptive type, 600 marks across three discipline-specific papers.
  3. Stage-III – Personality Test/Interview: 200 marks.
  4. Final merit is based on Preliminary and Main Examination scores, with selection by merit, preference and vacancy availability.

  1. Visit upsconline.nic.in and complete Universal Registration to obtain your URN.
  2. Fill the Common Application Form (CAF).
  3. Complete the CGSE 2027-specific module before the deadline.
  4. Upload your photograph, live photo capture and signature as specified.
  5. Pay the fee online (if applicable) and submit before 22 September 2026, 6:00 PM.
